STRESS – THE WHAT AND HOW

Today’s Joy Notes is looking into STRESS – THE WHAT AND HOW. Stress is the brain’s natural response to perceived threats, rooted in our evolutionary survival mechanisms. From a neuroscience perspective, it activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prepare the body for “fight or flight,” increasing heart rate, sharpening focus, and heightening alertness. While short-term stress can enhance performance, chronic stress disrupts brain function, impairing memory, decision-making, and emotional regulation, particularly in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.

Stress manifests physically through tension, fatigue, headaches, and digestive issues, while mentally, it triggers anxiety, irritability, and reduced cognitive flexibility. This mind-body connection shows that stress isn’t just an emotional state—it’s a physiological process affecting overall well-being.

Regulating stress starts with intentional practices that recalibrate the brain’s response. There was a time where we did not understand the power of intentional breathing and the use of physical movement to stimulate brain function. However we now know that techniques like mindfulness, deep breathing, and physical activity reduce cortisol levels, enhancing neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and recover. Positive social connections, sufficient sleep, and reflective practices also help restore balance.

Our brain is the core power source for vitality. By consciously managing the messages we internalize and how we respond to external forces, we harness the ability to control stress. This self-regulation not only improves performance but also fosters resilience, clarity, and emotional well-being, creating harmony between mind and body. Remember it is all temporary and with consciousness, movement and sleep you can regulate your stress levels. As a wise woman brought this phrase into our lives in song “Let It Go” – Elsa (Frozen).
