Today’s Joy Notes is focused on how we understand WHICH MASK ARE WE WEARING with each other. Masks come in all sizes and ornamental grandiosity. They provide protection from external pressure, shame, ridicule, fear and abuse. But this performance nature is not sustainable for success.
When we encounter others, one of the most critical questions we can ask ourselves is: what do they want us to know and feel about them? Often, people wear metaphorical masks to gain acceptance, support, or success in personal and professional settings. These masks help people navigate expectations, but they can also obscure true intentions and emotions. To understand others deeply, we must look beyond the surface and consider the fears, hopes, and desires that shape the masks they wear.
This concept of masks is especially relevant in business, entrepreneurship, and personal growth. In professional settings, people often present curated versions of themselves, which may hinder genuine collaboration and trust. Recognizing the masks others wear allows leaders and colleagues to provide the right support, fostering environments where individuals feel safe enough to be authentic.
Yet, it’s equally important to ask ourselves why we wear our own masks. Are we shielding our vulnerabilities, trying to conform, or hiding from failure? To achieve authenticity and confidence, we must learn to take off these masks when needed, trusting that our value lies in who we are—not in how we present ourselves. This journey requires courage and self-awareness, but it ultimately leads to more meaningful connections and sustainable success. Owning our authenticity, while letting go of the need for protection, empowers us to build trust and foster deeper relationships, both in business and life.
